Rather understandably, getting to North Dalmatia is easiest by air – with the main airport in the region being Zadar Airport.
Depending on what your final destination is, you could also fly to Split and then travel northwards to this region. See our Getting to Split page for details of what airlines fly there.
If you’re getting to North Dalmatia through other means, it is still best to head to Zadar first and then make the journey to your final destination accordingly.

Getting to North Dalmatia – By Bus and Train from Europe
Although Zadar does have a train station, this method of transport isn’t a particularly good option as you’ll most likely have to make quite a few changes along the way.
There are some daily international buses to Zadar. Routes include a service from Trieste (as part of the routes that go on to Split and Dubrovnik), plus services from Basle, Munich, Vienna and Ljubljana. You can look up bus times and book tickets for some of these routes on the Arriva website.
Depending on where in Europe you’re travelling from, it is advisable to get a bus to – say – Pula, Rijeka or Zagreb (or possibly even Split, although you’d then have to travel back up the coast) and then change for a bus to Zadar.
Getting to North Dalmatia – By Ferry from Europe
Jadrolinija run ferries from Ancona in Italy but only from the beginning of June to the end of September each year. (Near-daily sailings in August.)
Gomo Viaggi has a summer service from the ports of Cesenatico and Pesaro (both are close to Rimini) to Zadar. Services run from June to August inclusive.
As an alternative, you could take one of the year-round ferries from Ancona to Split instead, and then travel up the coast to Zadar by bus.

Croatia Airlines has direct flights from Zagreb (flight time is 45 minutes) and Pula (40 minutes) that operate year-round.

This is a useful – and only direct sea – connection for those travelling from the north Croatian coast (Istria) to Dalmatia. This connection also operates year-round, with a higher frequency in summer.
